Sampdoria want to bring Lucas Torreira back to Serie A from Premier League giants Arsenal but the midfielder’s wage demands make a deal ‘impossible’, according to La Repubblica.
Now, we don’t want to be overly pessimistic, but let’s just say Samp supporters shouldn’t get their hopes up.
Torreira made his name at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris beetween 2015 and 2018, his tireless performances at the heart of the Blucerchiati midfield paving the way for that £26 million switch to North London after the Russia World Cup.
But the chances of Torreira returning to where it all began look, well, let’s say slim.
La Repubblica, via Calciomercato, point out that Sampdoria are unwilling to hand any player a contract worth more than £15,000-a-week. That is a damn sight less than the £65,000-a-week Torreira currently takes home at the Emirates Stadium.
What’s more, Arsenal are holding out for a transfer fee in the region of £13 million. Tellingly, Sampdoria have not spent an eight-figure sum since the summer of 2019.
Sampdoria can’t afford to re-sign Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira
Torreira, then, appears no closer to sealing a move away from an Arsenal side who, despite including him in their pre-season tour, appear to have pushed the diminutive South American even further down their pecking order following the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City.

“My idea is to go and play in Italy or Spain. There is no chance that I will stay at Arsenal,” Torreira said in June, bemoaning Fiorentina’s failure to turn his impressive loan spell at the Stadio Artemio Franchi into a permanent transfer.
“I would have liked to stay at Fiorentina but this was not possible due to various problems.”
Torreira’s agent, meanwhile, admits that La Liga outfit Valencia have reached an agreement with the 26-year-old. According to AS, Torreira is Los Che’s top target, ahead of Tottenham’s Harry Winks and Southampton’s Ibrahima Diallo.
“We have a pre-agreement with Gattuso for Torreira to play in Valencia,” agent Pablo Bentancur explains.
It is not certain, however, if Valencia will – or can – meet Arsenal’s £13 million asking price.
