Borussia Dortmund attacker Julian Brandt has made the surprise decision to stay with the Bundesliga side despite being linked with a move to the Premier League for the best part of a year, with Arsenal and Liverpool linked with the German.

According to Sport1, the 26-year-old playmaker has this week made the decision to stay with Dortmund for the new season, with Brandt eager to remain at the club and fight for his place under new manager Edin Terzic despite not starting a single game for the Black and Yellow this campaign.

Brandt has been linked with a move away from Dortmund for well over 12 months, with Arsenal and Liverpool two sides who were strongly reported as interested parties in the former Bayer Leverkusen superstar, though it now appears that this transfer saga has come to an end, for the time being.

The surprise U-turn may come as a shock for many given how uncertain Brandt’s future at Dortmund still remains, with the versatile attacker likely to spend the majority of the new season on the bench behind the likes of Donyell Malen, Thorgan Hazard and Giovani Reyna, with English talent Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also set to become the German side’s latest superstar youngster this year.

Indeed, with Brandt in the peak of his career, a move to the Premier League this summer would have been perfect for the German, especially ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the playmaker is not guaranteed to win a spot in Hansi Flick’s squad that will head to Qatar.

However, despite interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, Brandt looks set to stay with Dortmund for the season, and this surprise decision could well backfire for the talented attacker, who could struggle to win a starting spot in Terzic’s best XI as the campaign progresses.

Staying at a club like Dortmund is hardly viewed as a regret for many players, but for Brandt, the playmaker could well think this if he fails to impress the Bundesliga side in the coming weeks, especially when there was seemingly a chance to leave for a Premier League side such as Arsenal and Liverpool.

The 26-year-old is making a brave decision staying at Dortmund this season, and with the World Cup on the horizon, it appears that Brandt has making the squad for Qatar on his mind, though whether or not he can make the final 26-man team is something we will discover as the season progresses.
