According to L’Equipe, Thomas Lemar was offered to Arsenal and Everton this summer, but he is now set to stay with Atlético Madrid.

What’s the story?

Well, that name might ring a bell for Arsenal fans.

Back in 2017, Arsène Wenger actually submitted a club-record £92m bid for Lemar, who was starring for Monaco at the time – the 72-year-old even confirmed that he made the offer.

The Frenchman said: “He decided to stay at Monaco. Did we make a £92m offer? Yes. Are we going to make another offer? Yes.”

Eventually, the France international moved to Madrid in a deal worth £52.7m, where things haven’t exactly gone to plan under Diego Simeone.

Lemar has scored just nine goals in 127 appearances for Atlético Madrid, while also providing 17 assists.

L’Equipe believe the 26-year-old was placed on the transfer list at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Arsenal and Everton both offered the chance to sign him as Simeone attempted to sell the forward.

Ultimately, there were no takers for Lemar, and he is now set to sign a new four-year contract in Spain, albeit on 50% of his current £106,000-a-week salary. We’re sure he’ll find a way to cope.

The World Cup winner made 34 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring four goals while also providing six assists.

Arsenal & Everton right to ignore Thomas Lemar

In our view, both the Gunners and the Toffees were right to turn down Lemar’s services.

It has been years since the Frenchman looked remotely threatening in attack, and his downfall in Madrid has been nothing short of spectacular.

Lemar looked set to hit the summit of football alongside Kylian Mbappe during their days at Monaco, but their careers could not have turned out to be more different.

Therefore, it would’ve been a risk for Mikel Arteta or Frank Lampard to sign him, especially on the wages he earns.

Hopefully, Lemar can get his career back on track, but Arsenal and Everton were right to leave him in Spain.
