Newly-promoted Serie A side Monza are reportedly close to signing Arsenal defender Pablo Mari, making it three players who will leave north London for good this week.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Spanish defender is set to sign for the Lombardy-based side in the next 48 hours, with Mari returning to Italy after an impressive loan spell with Udinese last season as Arsenal aim to make their third sale this week.

The turn of the month has seen Arsenal turn tact in their transfer strategy, shifting from player arrivals to sales, with Mari now set to join Bernd Leno and Lucas Torreira out the exit door as the German goalkeeper last night was announced as a Fulham player whilst the Uruguayan midfielder signs for Galatasaray in Turkey.

Mari was the first player Mikel Arteta ever signed as Arsenal manager with the Gunners spending a reported £14m to bring the defender over from Flamengo in 2020, however, despite strong performances at the start of his north London career, the centre-back has fallen into obscurity in the coming seasons.

Mari was heavily criticised by supporters and pundits at the start of last season for his performances in the first three games of the season as Arsenal conceded nine goals and scored none in the Premier League, with the 5-0 loss to Manchester City the last fans ever saw of the Spaniard in the Premier League.

Indeed, former Arsenal star David Luiz hailed his then-teammate as ‘amazing’ during his first few months at the club, but despite being signed by Arteta, Mari has become part of the club clearout this summer, with the defender now close to joining Monza for good.

Monza are one of Italy’s most interesting clubs to watch from afar, with club owner Silvio Berlusconi looking to take a club based in a town more famous for Formula 1 back to the top of the world in Serie A, and for Mari, the Arsenal defender could not be signing for a better club this summer.

As noted, Mari was incredible for Udinese last season, and for Monza, the centre-back will bring leadership and defensive quality to a side that will need both heading into their first ever season as a top-flight Italian club in what is to be a historic year for the Brianzoli.
