Rangers want Ridvan Yilmaz and are eyeing a move for the Besiktas star after selling Calvin Bassey to Ajax.

Rangers have confirmed the exit of Bassey, selling him to Dutch champions Ajax in a deal worth over £20million.

Bassey was outstanding at both centre back and left back under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, offering a truly versatile left-sided defender.

Ben Davies has come in from Liverpool as a left-sided centre back but a new left back will still be needed as competition for Borna Barisic.

Few left backs have been linked with Rangers but Ross Wilson could now look towards the Turkish market.

Rangers want Ridvan Yilmaz

The Daily Mail report that Rangers are exploring a move to sign Besiktas defender Ridvan Yilmaz as they look to reinvest the Bassey cash.

Yilmaz is into the final year of his Besiktas deal and it’s thought that he will cost north of £4million if Rangers want him.

Yilmaz, 21, has come up through the Besiktas ranks and is now an important first-team player with the Turkish side.

With four goals and seven assists in 52 Super Lig outings for Besiktas, Yilmaz has shown his attacking ability – exactly what Van Bronckhorst will be seeking.

Yilmaz isn’t the biggest defender of all time at around 5ft 9in tall, but he has outstanding pace and crossing ability.

Rangers may now feel that just over £8million for Davies and Yilmaz to replace Bassey is solid business, and will hope that Besiktas are under pressure to sell due to his contract situation.

Reports from Turkey earlier this year suggested that Tottenham Hotspur were pushing a deal for Yilmaz, but they have since signed Ivan Perisic as their new left wing back.

Tottenham’s loss could end up being Rangers’ gain though, with Van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson potentially seeking to lure Yilmaz to Ibrox in a very exciting deal.
