Nuno Tavares is reportedly unsure about joining Olympique Marseille on loan for the season, with the French club also having doubts over signing the Arsenal left-back.
According to L’Equipe, the 22-year-old Arsenal defender has backtracked on the idea of signing for Marseille on loan, with the Ligue 1 side coming close to bringing the Portuguese youngster to the club for the year after talks with the Gunners, though a deal could now be off.
As per the report, Tavares has also attracted interest from Serie A side Atalanta, whilst Brighton & Hove Albion are also reportedly eyeing the £7m Arsenal fan should Marc Cucurealla depart the Seagulls this summer for Manchester City, who want the Spaniard to replace north London-bound Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Tavares had an unusual debut year in the Premier League with Arsenal as the defender at first looked like a bargain signing from Benfica in the first half of the season, however, the fullback’s form in the New Year quickly fell apart, with performances against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace particular low points.
Indeed, Tavares is still a player who has the potential to develop into something special if he is given time to play regular first-team minutes, and signing for a club like Marseille on loan would have been perfect given the French giants’ involvement in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
However, Marseille now look to be on the same page as Tavares, it appears that a loan deal to sign the Arsenal defender is now falling apart, yet this could be the right decision for both the club and player, with the Premier League talent likely better off moving to a smaller side with less time in the spotlight.

Tavares is in need of a loan move this summer, and whilst Marseille could have been a good move given the quality of the French league and regular Champions League football, signing for a smaller side for the season would be a more logical transfer for the Portuguese defender.
After all, Tavares chocked last season whilst under pressure from Arsenal’s ravenous fanbase and the Premier League and English media, and a move either a smaller club in the country or abroad to a side outside of the limelight would benefit the 22-year-old hugely in his development.
