Bart Verbruggen’s £4 million switch from Anderlecht to Burnley is in danger of collapse with Lancs Live claiming that the Championship outfit are now looking at alternative targets.

It’s probably no stretch to suggest that Burnley were quietly confident that a deal for the 19-year-old shot-stopper would be agreed before next week’s league opener against Huddersfield Town.

Why else would the Clarets let Wayne Hennessey join Nottingham Forest, leaving Vincent Kompany with only Will Norris and Bailey Peacock-Farrell?

But what is it John Steinbeck wrote about ‘best laid plans’? It’s unlikely he had Burnley’s goalkeeper situation in mind when he penned that iconic line, but the shoe certainly fits.

Who will be Burnley’s goalkeeper next season?

Reports from Belgium on Wednesday claimed that Verbruggen was heading to England in order to undergo a medical before putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at Turf Moor. Burnley were to pay around £4 million up front, rising to £6 million.

But, according to Lancs Live, the Verbruggen transfer is now in serious doubt.

Het Nieuwsblad back up these claims, even if they do say that ‘the deal is not completely over yet’. Some have suggested there may be problems with Verbruggen’s work permit. Het Nieuwsblad add that there is currently ‘no final agreement with Anderlecht’, further complicating matters.

Burnley may now step up their interest in Aro Muric instead. Muric, contacted to Kompany’s former club Manchester City, did initially appear to be Burnley’s number one target before the Verbruggen links emerged.

Burnley have already signed two players from the Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions this summer; Centre-halves Taylor Harwood-Bellis and CJ Egan-Riley.

“We’ve brought in seven players. We have to keep bringing in players,” Kompany told the Burnley Express this week. “Not because we’re not happy with the players that are here now, just because we have to increase the body count.

“That’s going to carry on. The quicker the better because, unfortunately, we have eight games in August and have to deal with that.”
