Report: £4m ace would ‘like to’ join Burnley, but Kompany faces three big problems

KV Oostende striker Makhtar Gueye would relish the prospect of playing under Vincent Kompany but a potential £4 million move to Burnley is a long way away at this stage, Lancs Live report.

Three new centre-halves, a 20-goal attacker, a pair of hard-working midfielders and one of the most talented young left-backs in British football; Kompany and the rest of the Burnley staff can probably afford themselves a pat on the back while toasting a job well done thus far.

Especially with Bart Verbruggen on his way from Anderlecht too. The 19-year-old goalkeeper, who could set Burnley back around £5 million, will help offset the departures of both Nick Pope and Wayne Hennessey.

But there remains one glaring omission in Burnley’s shopping basket. A new number nine.

Burnley like Makhtar Gueye – and the admiration is mutual

Their Championship opener away at Huddersfield Town is just over a week away and The Clarets have a grand total of two fit and senior centre-forwards on their books; Jay Rodriguez and Ashley Barnes. Neither are particularly prolific.

So Gueye’s rather frank admission when quizzed about the prospect of potentially becoming Burnley’s new Chris Wood – or Wout Weghorst, to a lesser extent – seemed to come at the perfect time.

“I know I was mentioned (at Burnley). We’ll see if that becomes concrete,” says the 6ft 3ins targetman, who likens his style to the Championship’s current Golden Boot holder Aleksandr Mitrovic.

“Of course, I would like to work with a top former player like Kompany. He spoke to me after our match (against Anderlecht) last year and said that I had learned a lot tactically.

“I also think that the physical Championship would suit me as a big striker with a lot of duel power.”

According to LancsLive, however, there are three big obstacles preventing Gueye from posing in claret-and-blue. The lack of top-flight football is one. What’s more, Oostende are under no pressure to cash in on a man rumoured to be valued in the £4 million bracket (HLN). Burnley, LancsLive say, are in danger of being priced out.

There is also interest in Gueye from across the continent.

Work to be done, then, for Kompany and co. But with Huddersfield looming on the horizon, time is running out.
