Burnley are eyeing up Royal Antwerp winger Manuel Benson amid uncertainty surrounding Maxwel Cornet’s future at the Championship outfit, as reported by Het Laaste Nieuws.

If Benson’s thumping free-kick during the recent 2-1 friendly victory over Dynamo Kiev is anything go by, perhaps there is life after Cornet after all.

Antwerp’s former Belgium U21 international is likened to Gareth Bale for a reason. Blessed with blistering pace and an eye for the spectacular, Benson has been linked with the likes of Inter Milan, Lyon and Marseille over the years but could now end up at Turf Moor instead.

Burnley want Manuel Benson from Royal Antwerp

According to Het Laaste Nieuws, via Voetbal Krant, Burnley are keen. Benson would become the third Jupiler League import since the former Anderlecht boss took over from Sean Dyche. Samuel Benson and Josh Cullen have already arrived.

What’s more, the versatile, 25-year-old winger is perhaps the most intriguing of Burnley’s summer targets. A combined tally of 14 goals and assists last season, plus an ability to play on either flank while producing match-changing contributions, could help offset the potential departure of the most gifted footballer in Vincent Kompany’s squad.

Cornet’s £17.5 million release clause is surely going to be triggered at some point in the near future.

“He is a very technical attacking player,” Patrick de Koster, Benson’s agent, told FC Inter News when his client was being linked with a move to the 2021 Serie A champions.

“It is not easy to find players with similar characteristics. (Benson is like) Gareth Bale – quick, fast, with a knack of finding the net. Manuel has a way of playing that resembles that of the Real Madrid player.”

Benson became Royal Antwerp’s record signing when he joined from KRC Genk for around £3 million back in 2019. With just one year left on his contract, Antwerp will be hoping to make some semblance of a profit.
