Olympique Marseille are reportedly in talks to sign AS Roma midfielder and Tottenham target Jordan Veretout, with the Frenchman eyed as a potential partner for former Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi.

According to L’Equipe, Marseille have opened negotiations with Roma over the signing of Veretout, with the Ligue 1 side looking for a replacement to Boubacar Kamara, who left this summer at the end of his contract to join Aston Villa on a free transfer.

The defensive midfielder has been one of Marseille’s best players in recent years and last season former a solid partnership with Guendouzi, who this summer joined the French giants on a permanent deal from Arsenal after becoming something of a misfit at the north London club.

As a result of Kamara’s departure, Marseille are now in talks with a replacement in Roma star Veretout, with Tottenham also reportedly interested in the former Aston Villa star, with reports suggesting that the 29-year-old could leaving the Italian capital for just £12m.

With Jose Mourinho already signing Nemanja Matic from Manchester United on a free transfer, the Portuguese manager has a replacement lined up for next season, and Veretout could relish the chance to join Marseille, who next season, alongside Tottenham, will be competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Indeed, Veretout might be a European champion of sorts with Roma after their UEFA Europa Conference League triumph last season, but the chance to play in the Champions League next season for a side from his home country will be an intriguing prospect for the midfielder despite interest from Tottenham.

Veretout has had an interesting career despite the high-profile clubs the midfielder has played for over the years, yet a return to France with Marseille in his prime is a fitting next move for the 29-year-old, especially with the French club in need of signing a new partner for Guendouzi.

Indeed, Veretout has impressed whenever given the chance to play, and whilst interest from Tottenham is flattering, moving to Marseille could be a great move for the France international, who could impress those with the national team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
