The race to sign Ridvan Yilmaz has taken another twist with the Daily Record saying that Rangers are unwilling to pay £6 million for a defender also on the radar of Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.

Besiktas’ 21-year-old Turkey international, the report adds, has been on Rangers’ radar for quite a while. It is no coincidence that the Glasgow giants appear to have stepped up their interest this week, however.

The departure of Calvin Bassey to Ajax suddenly leaves Rangers with a hole to fill on the left-hand side of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s backline. But despite banking nearly £20 million from Bassey – and a further £10 million via Joe Aribo’s Southampton switch – Rangers are not going to go crazy and lose all sight of value.

Yes, they want Yilmaz. The Gers, however, have little interest in paying £6 million for a youngster who will be available for free in less than 12 months’ time. Yilmaz’s Besiktas contract expires in July 2023.

Rangers or Tottenham for Ridvan Yilmaz?

The Daily Record add that Yilmaz also has interest from ‘a lot of top European clubs’. One of those appears to be Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Fanatik, Antonio Conte has given a move the attack-minded wideman the green light. Yilmaz, meanwhile, is understood to be enthused about the prospect of playing under one of the continent’s finest tacticians in North London. Spurs are not operating under the same budgetary constraints as Rangers either, and are therefore unlikely to baulk at Besiktas’ £6 million asking price.

“If I am in a position to make money for my club like Cenk Tosun (who joined Everton for £27 million in 2018), I will not resist,” explains Yilmaz, who produced four assists and three goals last season and idolises the likes of Marcelo and Alphonso Davis.

“Of course, every player has a goal. Playing in England is my biggest dream. I’m at the beginning of my journey. I have many things to learn. I am improving every day and I am constantly working to make up for my lack of physicality and fitness.

“By the way, I take English lessons for two hours a day.”

The arrival of Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan complicates matters. The former Inter Milan flyer is likely to feature regularly in the left-wing back position under Conte. And that’s without mentioning Ryan Sessegnon, who made impressive strides under the former Inter Milan boss.

Yilmaz, then, has little choice but to wait patiently and see how things unfold.

Talks between Yilmaz and Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, broke down at the start of the month (Sport1).
