It’s almost been a year since Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle launched Wordle in October 2021 and people are still obsessed with it.

The crazy hype has obviously died down, but completing the daily Wordle is a new part of many people’s morning routine – and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon.

Wordle was bought by newspaper giant The New York Times for a seven-figure sum in January 2022 after it took over the world, and millions still play the popular word game.

Following its success, a number of other word games were created to try and mimic Wordle’s popularity. None have had quite the same frenzy, but they’re fun to play nonetheless.

The latest word game everyone seems to be playing is Quintessential, but what is it? And how do you play it? Read on to find out…

What is Quintessential?

Quintessential is a word game that looks very similar to Wordle in design but has slightly different rules.

The aim of the game is to get each of the five horizontal words correct in as few moves as possible by swapping the letters around.

It uses the same style board as Wordle, with five words stacked on top of each other in a grid. However, the letters are all already there on the board.

All you have to do is unscramble the letters to form five different five letter words using the least number of moves. Puzzles can actually be solved in as few as eight moves!

How to play Quintessential

First, visit the Quintessential website here and you will be greeted with a How To Play pop up. Tap the x in the top right-hand corner and the game board will appear.

Use your mouse to create five real words by clicking and dragging letters around. The game will tell you which letters are in the correct place using colours.

If a tile turns green, that means the letter is in the right word and the right place. However, if it goes yellow, that means it’s in the right word but not the correct position.

A grey tile means that it’s not in the right word or position so you’ll need to move it into a different word and try again.

As you get more letters correct, things should start getting a little easier and you can begin trying to work out what the words could be.

The game always starts by giving you a few green letters which can’t be moved too which makes things a little easier.

It will show you how many moves you’ve used at the bottom of the grid and the aim of the game is to use as few as possible.
