Pontus Jansson once dubbed sought-after player, Ivan Toney, his ‘idol’, with Leeds United now keen to sign the striker.

The Bees centre-back, who donned Leeds colours in the Championship, added that Toney is an ‘inspiration’ to him and what he does for the team is ‘unbelievable’, as he told the club’s website in May.

For a newly-promoted side, to score 12 Premier League goals, and that for an inexperienced side, is pretty impressive from Toney.

That’s probably why the likes of Leeds United and Manchester United are looking to bring the £40 million-rated hitman to their shores this summer.

Either way, this is what Jansson had to say about Toney just before the end of the 2021/22 season and what he does for the team.

“I normally make a joke about it, but Ivan is my idol,” said Jansson. “What he does for this team is just unbelievable.

“I don’t think people also understand how important to the team and how good he is. He’s an inspiration for me as captain and I can’t praise him enough.”

TONEY NEEDED AT ELLAND ROAD

With Raphinha out of the door, Patrick Bamford coming back from a long-term injury, then Leeds need more goals added to their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Bamford needs senior competion for those forward places, he can’t do it all on his own and given how long he has been out for, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it takes him several weeks to get going when the season starts next month.

Either way, Jesse Marsch needs more firepower and someone like Toney would be a brilliant purchase from the club and a much rounded player than Bamford.

He’s proven he can hit double figures in a team that provides chances, and whilst Leeds struggle from a defensive standpoint, they could argue they create more than the London club.

Either way, someone like Jansson might not like to hear it, but his ‘idol’ is better suited to making that switch to Elland Road than staying at the Brentford Community Stadium.
