What would you rather have, Rangers fans? A European trophy glinting on the mantelpiece, or an exciting new left-back? OK, so obviously you’d choose the former. But snatching the latter from under Eintracht Frankfurt’s nose at least offers some semblance of a consolation.

According to the Daily Mail, Rangers are looking into a deal that would see highly-rated Turkey international Ridvan Yilmaz replace the Ajax-bound Calvin Bassey at Ibrox.

Adventurous and explosive, Yilmaz loves nothing more than flying forward on the overlap before whipping crosses into the six-yard box. Sounds familiar doesn’t it, Gers supporters?

There’s even an argument to be made that the 21-year-old Besiktas starlet is more technical and naturally-talented than the outgoing Bassey. Yilmaz appears to rely less on power and speed, and more on that devastating delivery from out wide.

Bassey, in 26 league games, set up two goals while failing to score any of his own last season. Yilmaz, meanwhile, produced three goals and four assists while playing across 27 matches.

And while Besiktas are holding out for around £8 million – despite the fact that Yilmaz now has less than 12 months left on his contract – Rangers are hardly short of funds with Bassey’s impending move to Amsterdam set to earn the Glasgow giants a windfall in the region of £18 million.

“Yes it’s true, an official offer has arrived for Ridvan. But we have no intention of accepting it,” Besiktas president Ahmet Nur Cebi said earlier in the window.

“The offer must reach 10 million euros (around £8 million). If someone pays 10 million euros, I will sell Ridvan to (a club in) Europe.”

But where do Eintracht Frankfurt come in?

Well, according to German publication Sport1, talks between Frankfurt and Besiktas broke down at the start of July. The Bundesliga outfit – who broke Rangers hearts thanks to Kevin Trapp’s penalty-saving heroics in Seville – failed to reach an agreement over how the Yilmaz deal would be structured.

Yilmaz joining Rangers instead would not make up for the disappointment of losing a European final in the most devastating of circumstances. Like slapping a band aid on a broken leg.

But snatching one of the game’s most exciting young left-backs from under Frankfurt’s nose would certainly taste sweet.
