It’s not often you Nat Phillips and Robert Lewandowski appear in the very same sentence.

But, when casting his mind over a magnificent managerial career late last year, Jurgen Klopp could think of only one player who’s rapid-fire development under his stewardship could come matching close to Lewandowski’s evolution from wide-eyed youngster to net-busting Terminator.

“People often ask me which player made the biggest improvements under my leadership, and I say Robert Lewandowski,” Klopp mused after the ‘Bolton Baresi’ bamboozled the great Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a Cruyff turn during a Champions League victory away at AC Milan in December.

“That’s probably right, but not far off that is Nat Phillips.

“His development is absolutely insane. People love him because of his heading but with his feet he is unbelievable.”

Considering such a glowing assessment of Klopp’s 25-year-old centre-back, you might be surprised to learn that Phillips played just three first-team games in the first half of last term before being loaned out to Bournemouth in January.

But, given the presence of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip on Merseyside, Phillips almost feels like a victim of the club’s success. In another era, he’d be a regular in the Liverpool squad. But this is no ordinary Liverpool side.

“Life is sometimes not fair,” Klopp added. “We cannot keep him forever, that’s clear.”

Klopp refused to stand in Divock Origi’s way earlier this summer; Another seldom-seen Anfield benchwarmer opting for a new adventure in Italy after a season spent on the sidelines.

A Fulham side with offers on the table for a whole host of targets should be confident of coming to an agreement with Liverpool, then, after adding Phillips to a defensive wish-list longer than a Leonard Cohen lyric sheet (Goal.com). Liverpool, as they have shown on multiple occasions during the Klopp era, won’t keep fringe players against their will.

“I think we’ll talk in pre-season,” Phillips told the Liverpool Echo a couple of months ago. “My main aspiration is to be playing regular football at the highest level possible.

“I’d like to think that would be the Premier League. I feel like I’m fully capable of playing Premier League football. That’s my aspiration.”

A Fulham side back in the big time after making light work of the Championship, then, is likely to appeal to Phillips. And if the Cottagers are willing to put £15 million on the table, don’t expect Klopp or Liverpool to put up much of a fight.
