On Thursday, Nottingham Forest announced the signing of Jesse Lingard, after offering the 29-year-old more money than West Ham.

The Championship play-off final winners are supposedly paying the England international £200,000-a-week, which is £50,000-a-week more than West Ham’s highest offer, according to The Times.

However, the east Londoners could actually help Nottingham Forest pay that salary by giving them millions.

What’s the story?

Well, it was said that West Ham would turn their attention to Ben Brereton Diaz if they missed out on Lingard.

The Chile international shone for Blackburn last season, scoring 22 goals in 37 Championship appearances to put his name up in lights.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting.

Nottingham Forest actually sold Brereton Diaz to Blackburn in 2019, inserting a sell-on clause in the deal which entitles them to a cut of any future fee, according to the Nottingham Post.

Unfortunately, the percentage value of the sell-on clause is not disclosed, although with Blackburn demanding £20m for their talisman this summer, even a 10% sell-on would entitle Nottingham Forest to £2m.

Football works in a funny way. After all, what are the chances Nottingham Forest used to own the player who West Ham have identified as their Lingard alternative?

If Steve Cooper receives a healthy injection of cash, so soon after beating the Hammers to a major signing in Lingard, he will surely be even more delighted.

Nottingham Forest vs West Ham will be tasty

Coincidentally, the two sides meet on the second week of the season, with West Ham travelling to the City Ground on August 14th.

If Lingard is named in the starting XI by Cooper, and Brereton Diaz is chosen to start by David Moyes, it will certainly be an interesting match.

It is sure to be an atmospheric encounter even if Brereton Diaz stays at Blackburn, with West Ham fans presumably set to taunt Lingard for being greedy.

You won’t want to miss that game, to say the least.
