Speaking to JOE, Jamie Carragher has named Virgil van Dijk as arguably the greatest centre-back in Premier League history.

The Dutch defender has undoubtedly been the best centre-back in England in recent years, and Carragher reckons that he’s in the conversation with the likes of Rio Ferdinand as one of the best in Premier League history.

The pundit states that the Dutchman ticks every single box, while his passing range separates him from any other defender to have played at this level.

What’s been said?

Carragher was full of praise for van Dijk.

“He is the one who ticks every box, people argue that Rio is similar, but I think the passing range of Virgil van Dijk is on another level to what Rio could do. Rio was really good on the ball, but the 60, 70 yard passes from van Dijk. It’s almost too easy for him Premier League football if we’re being honest. He’s not tested enough, it’s too easy for him,” Carragher said.

The ultimate defender

Carragher says that the Premier League looks too easy for Virgil van Dijk, and as ridiculous as that sounds, it’s true.

Yes, Aleksandar Mitrovic ran him ragged at the weekend, but other than that instance, it’s hard to remember van Dijk ever even breaking into a sweat at Liverpool.

He’s a true Rolls Royce defender, he’s got all of the physical attributes in the world, but he never has to sprint, he glides across the pitch, dominating games with relative ease.

Factor in his technical brilliance, and you have the ultimate defender.

Van Dijk may well be the best centre-back in Premier League history, and if he keeps on playing at this level, he will be in the conversation as one of the best defenders in all of history.
