Music in a film or TV show can often make or break the final product as the choice of songs or cinematic score can add just the right feeling to each.

Even in a horror film, music plays a vital role as a well-placed toe-tapping tune can help alleviate the tension and lull us into a false sense of security before bad things start to happen.

Nope, the latest effort from Jordan Peele, understands this expertly as the movie blends a chilling score with some classic tracks but exactly which songs feature in the film’s soundtrack and who composed its score?

Nope release date and plot preview

After months of anticipation, Nope finally landed in US cinemas on July 22, 2022, with UK fans having to wait a few weeks until August 12.

Nope tells the story of ranch-owning siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood who begin investigating an uncanny and chilling discovery after their father, Otis, is killed by random objects falling from the sky.

The pair recruit tech salesman Angel Torres and documentarian Antlers Holst in an attempt to capture video evidence of an unidentified flying object.

Who composed the score?

On top of its licensed songs, Nope also features a chilling cinematic score that is the work of composer Michael Abels.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Abels was introduced to music at a young age as he used to play on the family piano and honed his talent at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles.

However, despite showing a keen interest in music from childhood, Michael only earned his first composing credit in 2017 at the age of 54 when he scored Jordan Peele’s debut movie, Get Out.

Both Get Out and Michael Abels’ score were hugely well-received and the composer returned to create the music for Peele’s next film, Us, in 2019.

Aside from working with Jordan Peele, Michael Abels has also worked on the likes of HBO’s Bad Education, See You Yesterday, All Day and a Night and Nightbooks.

To coincide with the arrival of Nope, Michael Abels’ skin-crawling score for the movie has been released on the likes of Spotify and Apple Music.

Universal’s Nope is out now at cinemas in the US after releasing on July 22, 2022, while UK fans will be able to watch from August 12.
