Speaking on The Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Tottenham and their pursuit of a new attacking midfielder this summer.

Spurs have made plenty of additions already in this transfer window, but one position they’ve not bolstered despite some concrete links is in the attacking midfield spot.

The likes of Christian Eriksen and Paulo Dybala have been linked as Spurs look to accommodate a potential switch to Conte’s 3-5-2, but as of yet, their hunt has been unsuccessful.

James Maddison has been touted as another target as of late, but according to Jacobs, a move for Nicolo Zaniolo is more likely at this moment in time.

What’s been said?

Jacobs shared what he knows about Maddison and Zaniolo’s situations.

“If they genuinely want Maddison then they’ll have to move a lot faster than with Zaniolo. Let’s not forget he was Leicester’s Player of the Year last season and that’s why Leicester are more bullish than Roma about hanging onto him. Let’s see what happens with Newcastle, Spurs are keeping an eye on that one, but at the time of this recording Zaniolo is a more viable option and likely option than Maddison,” Jacobs said.

More likely, but more of a risk

Zaniolo may be easier to land than Maddison, but he’d be more of a risky signing than the Leicester City star.

Indeed, the Italian has never played in England, and after two serious injuries, his fitness record also has to be called into question.

Meanwhile, Maddison is adjusted to the rigours of the English game and has a much more favourable injury record.

Yes, Maddison would be more expensive and they face plenty of competition, but it may be worth putting in that effort and coughing up the cash for the Englishman.
