They say kids are our future leaders and doctors, but Alena Analeigh Wicker is doing it all right now. Meet the 13-year-old medical school student who’s already working hard to shape our futures.

Working out which colleges to apply for can be one of the most difficult decisions any high schooler can face, but Alena got it all out of the way early as she’s only 13 and already has her medical school offer.

It was reported by Arizona Central, last week, that the teenager had been accepted into The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine as part of an early acceptance programme.

It looks as if Alena will be starting the course in 2024 as she is currently enrolled at Arizona State University.

She explained in an interview that the application process for the medical school was “super stressful” but how she was adamant to follow her dreams regardless of what anyone said, even if it was “no”.

“If I could say anything to another little girl that looks like me: never stop believing, don’t give up on your dreams just because somebody tells you ‘no’,” she explained, “And even if it seems impossible, it’s not impossible, and I’m proof that you can do anything that you put your mind and your heart to.”

Alena said she’s the youngest African American person to get into a US medical school, and the second-youngest person overall.

Alena didn’t just wake up one day and decide to throw her hat into the medical school game while in middle school – she’s a child prodigy.

According to the New York Post, at just three years old the youngster was already reading chapter books and by the time she was 11 she’d already taken several high school courses.

When she turned 12 Alena graduated high school and enrolled in online classes at ASU. Originally, Alena had plans to work with NASA so enrolled to study engineering, but her interests eventually switched to medicine and she changed her major to biological sciences and is continuing with online courses, including taking genetics and history of medicine this summer.

“I’ve had amazing instructors. I love the classes that I’m in,” she said. “I like that the classes are six or seven weeks and then you move on to the next class. It can be super stressful, depending on the type of class that you’re in, but I like them.”

If all goes to plan for Alena she’ll start studying to be a doctor at age 15, in 2024, and graduate when she’s 18 when other kids her age are prepping for their freshmen year at college.

Age is ‘not a big deal’

Although she’s so young, she’s very focused and reported to be one of the youngest people accepted into a US medical school. Alena said age is “not a big deal” to her and she is just a normal kid.

She explained: “I was in honors choir, I was in cheerleading, I play soccer. I hang out at the mall with my friends like a 13-year-old does, and I go to the movies with my friends, I go swimming with my friends. I’m very structured and very disciplined.

“Age for me, it’s not a big deal.”
