Kanye West was at the Lakewood Church recently when he told all the parents to protect their children from Hollywood Symbolism. If the term seems alien to you, we have found its meaning.

The rapper, known for his blunt statements and opinions, believes that kids are influenced by what the media feeds them, which in turn results in the children forgetting their own identities.

The concept of symbolism has long existed in Hollywood and evolved over the years. Here’s what it means.

Meaning of Hollywood Symbolism

Symbolism is the art of giving a different or additional meaning to things or objects to represent more than what they actually are.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Symbolism is the representation of the West in films and movies, typically with certain ideas and symbols that create an impression on the audience.

However, the phrase has taken different meanings with time as the concept of Hollywood Symbolism has been defined differently by filmmakers over the years.

Through his speech, Kanye appears to have implied that parents need to be wary of what the media portrays in terms of images and symbols because they are far from reality.

Examples of movies that have embodied the concept

Back in the 19th century, symbolism was pivotal in literature. The movies made in this era ran high on Romanticism.

Back then, the West was represented by untamed wilderness and unrestrained beauty in the movies, which were the characteristics of a dominant hero.

By the 20th century, filmmakers such as John Ford had started to glorify the West in movies like Stagegoat and The Searchers. The hero would remain true to romance while representing American dominance.

In the New Hollywood movement, films centered on gore and violence, thus straying away from romance during the political uprising. Films such as The Wild Bunch and Pat Garrett are two good examples of this.

However, the postmodern interpretations of the West contradict romanticism and show evil triumphing over good. The best example would be No Country For Old Men.
