Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim is delighted to retain the services of Matheus Nunes after the Portugal international rejected Premier League duo Wolves and Newcastle United, speaking to Record.

Pep Guardiola does tend to let emotion get the better of him at times when praising opposition players. Just ask Nathan Redmond.

So when the Manchester City boss described Nunes as ‘one of the best players in the world today’ earlier in the year, it was difficult to know how much to read into it.

There can be no doubts about Nunes’ talent. But the 23-year-old Brazil-born Portugal international has a long way to go before he can conceivably call Kevin de Bruyne and co equals.

Either way, Nunes has little interest in leaving Sporting for a club unable to offer him a seat at Europe’s top table. According to The Athletic, the box-to-box dynamo had little interest in joining Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.

He was similarly frosty when Newcastle United came calling back in 2021 too (Record).

“I’m happy that Matheus Nunes is still here,” Amorim says. “I’m happy that Sporting’s players, like Matheus Nunes, reject offers that would change their lives to stay at Sporting.

“This is my reality; I am very happy with my squad. My players are the best in the world.”

Nunes, who would cost around £42 million, has four more years left on his contract.

Liverpool have been linked recently too. But, according to O Jogo, Nunes has already informed Amorim that he will be sticking around for another season at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, as Sporting look to snatch their title back from reigning Primeira Liga champions FC Porto.

Nunes came close to joining Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton last year in a bargain £20 million deal. That was before Rafa Benitez arrived at Goodison Park, and the transfer went up in smoke.

That certainly won’t do his popularity much good on the blue side of the city.
