Monkeypox has been declared a global emergency by WHO in 2022 after several people have been diagnosed with it. Following the news, Twitter was quick to react with lockdown memes.

Several people have been reacting to the news of Monkeypox being declared a global emergency as some are worried things might go back to as they were when there was a COVID-19 outbreak.

While a lockdown has not been announced, social media users seem convinced that it may not be too far.

What is Monkeypox?

As per WHO, Monkeypox is an illness caused by the Monkeypox virus.  It is a viral zoonotic infection, which means, it can be spread from animals to humans, as well as from person to person.

It can be spread if a person comes in contact with someone who has a monkeypox rash or through a face-to-face, skin-to-skin, mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-skin contact, including sexual contact. At the same time, the environment can also be contaminated due to the same.

This means, that if an infectious person touches clothing, bedding, towels, objects, electronics, and surfaces and the same is touched by another person then there are chances the other person could also get infected.

The virus could also spread from someone who is pregnant to the fetus, after birth through skin-to-skin contact, or from a parent to an infant or child during close contact.

How can you protect yourself?

WHO states that it is advised to limit close contact with people who have suspected or confirmed monkeypox, or with animals who could be infected. Always clean and disinfect environments that could be contaminated.

If you think you have monkeypox, isolate yourself immediately. If you or someone you know has monkeypox, one must be isolated until ” lesions have crusted over, the scabs have fallen off and a new layer of skin has formed underneath.”

If you think you have been in contact with someone who has monkeypox, closely keep an eye on any signs or symptoms of the illness for 21 days after the time you were last exposed.
