Queens Park Rangers suffered a penalty-shootout defeat to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup – but on-loan Leeds ace Tyler Roberts scored on his debut for QPR, and local media handed him an 8/10 for his outing.

Roberts, 23, left Leeds this summer to join QPR on a loan deal – which could be made permanent at the end of the season. It comes after suffering an injury in Jesse Marsch’s first game in charge, and failing to recover until now.

The Wales international will be desperate to be a part of Rob Page’s Wales squad in Qatar. It has seen him leave Leeds on loan to join QPR. Having missed the first two league games through injury, he was on the bench on Tuesday.

Coming on after 60 minutes, Roberts scored a howitzer of a goal. Travelling with the ball for some distance, he then unleased a shot from 20 yards into the top corner. Charlton equalised in injury time, and won on penalties.

West London Sport published a player ratings piece on the QPR players, and handed Roberts an 8/10. That is despite only playing for 30 minutes – and scoring in the shootout. They described his goal as “magnificent”.

“Made his long-awaited debut when he was thrown on for the final half-hour. Marked it in style with a magnificent 25-yard effort that flew into the top corner. Looked very sharp with his movement and took a fine penalty in shoot-out.”

What a start for the £4million (Mail) Leeds signing. Leeds fans will know that Roberts is easily capable of moments like this but during his time at Elland Road, in which he amassed 108 appearances, it was far too sparce.

If he can nail down a place in the QPR side, which should be slightly easier after his goal, he might begin to gain some momentum. Does he have a Leeds future? Well, his Leeds deal ends in 2024. But as things stand, it looks unlikely.
