As the Tory leadership contest enters the member’s ballot stage, we explore the scandals of the two potential Prime Ministers. Read on to learn more about Liz Truss’ affair with Mark Field and Rishi Sunak’s green card controversy.

As politicians battle it out to be crowned Britain’s next PM, historical backlash or scandals tend to re-emerge. It comes as their decisions and duties are held under scrutiny. Previous actions are sometimes thrown back into the mix as they step further into the spotlight.

Liz Truss’ 2005 affair resurfaces

In 2009, things became rather complicated for Liz Truss. She was running as a Parliamentary Candidate for the Conservative Party at the time.

At the time, Truss was said to be a favourite of then Prime Minister David Cameron. But he was faced with a tricky predicament.

Several members of the South West Norfolk Conservative Association, where Truss was running to be an MP voiced their displeasure as they discovered through a Google search that the potential MP had engaged an affair with sitting Conservative MP Mark Field in 2004-2005.

The Norfolk Conservative group subsequently held a vote on whether or not to deselect Liz Truss for the affair with Mark Field. However, Truss was victorious by a margin of 132 to 37 and went on to win the South West Norfolk seat.

Prior to the vote on Truss’ deselection, she apologised to the association. At the time she stated: “I am really sorry about that [affair]. It’s a mistake I made and as far as me and my husband are concerned its water under the bridge.”

Truss also reminded the members that the affair had been public for several years. She said the situation reflected a communication issue within the party.

Following her victory in the vote, Truss asserted that she was “absolutely delighted”.

Rishi Sunak’s green card backlash explained

In what is undoubtedly a more high-profile controversy between the two candidates, Rishi Sunak received criticism in April 2022 when it was revealed he had held a ‘US Green Card’ during his time as Chancellor.

Following on from the backlash surrounding Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty and her non-dom tax status, Sunak faced questions over a green card he held. It entitled him to have permanent residence in the US.

The anger arose as it was suspected Rishi Sunak was using his green card in order to gain a certain tax benefit. This was because all international earnings must be paid to the US if you are a green card holder.

A subsequent investigation was carried out into Rishi Sunak’s green card. However it was found Sunak did not break the ministerial code. Neither his wife’s tax status nor his green card presented a conflict of interest.

Rishi Sunak proved right about innocence

Prior to the investigation, Sunak assured the public via a statement he uploaded to Twitter. He declared he had not carried out any wrongdoing.

He penned at the time: “Today I have written to the Prime Minister asking him to refer my ministerial declarations to the Independent Advisor on Ministers’ Interests.

“I have always followed the rules and I hope such a review will provide further clarity.”

Following the incident verdict, Sunak continued to carry out his role as the Chancellor. He stayed in this role until his resignation in early July 2022.
