To celebrate One Direction’s 12th anniversary, The X Factor revealed never-before-seen footage of how the band came to be. This has caused a stir after Liam Payne claimed on a podcast the band was created to fit around him.

Cast your mind back to 2010, more than a decade ago when the reality competition was the highlight of the weekend. For the seventh season that summer, fans saw the likes of 1D form before our eyes.

To commemorate their time as one of the world’s biggest bands, the reality show shared footage that didn’t air on TV. It features the judges picking who they think should form a group, instead of being sent home as an individual.

And with that, One Direction was born on The X Factor.

In the never-before-seen clip, the three judges are going through aspiring male singers hoping to get into the next round.

They decided to split them up into groups by creating a girl band and a boy band. As Simon Cowell picks two ideal candidates, Nicole Scherzinger comes up with the idea of creating a supposed boy group.

Not knowing the impact that the five then-teenagers would be creating, One Direction became a worldwide hit. As of 2022, they have sold more than 70 million records globally.

1D began with Nicole’s “imaginary boyband”

It has been more than a decade since millions of viewers witnessed the creation and success of One Direction. Nonetheless, Directioners never knew how the band was really formed – until now, thanks to Nicole Scherzinger.

To celebrate the group’s 12th anniversary, exclusive footage from X Factor revealed what happened behind the scenes before announcing that Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik would be put into a band that would change their lives forever.

In the middle of the four-minute clip, Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, and Nicole were together deciding which X Factor contestants to put together as a group because as solo contestants, they were “too talented to let go”.

Niall, Harry, and Louis were straight away put together from the start. Looking for “the little stars”, the judges agreed on adding Liam and Zayn into the group. “They’re the cutest boy band ever. I love it. The little girls are gonna love them,” Nicole said after looking at the final lineup.

Having the fixed trio of Niall, Harry, and Louis, the judges were looking for additional members. Then, they came with the picture of Liam. Simon, looking at the headshot, commented, “He was a stand-out audition”. He proposed Liam be in a different group.

Nicole, who interrupted, visioned that Liam “could be actually the leader”. However, Simon responds by saying that “he thinks he’s better than everyone else”.

After the “unbelievable” group was formed with the addition of Zayn, Simon told the judges he wanted the boy band on his team.

As per its final result and One Direction’s journey in the singing competition, the boys garnered a lot of international attention, becoming the world’s biggest boy group in the early 2010s.

Liam Payne’s podcast interview

In June 2022, Liam made a surprising appearance on Logan Paul’s podcast series called Impaulsive. The 28-year-old talked about his beginnings in One Direction, as well as his current career and relationship with old pals.

After hinting his current relationship with Niall, Louis, Harry, and Zayn was merely cordial, the Strip That Down singer made the shocking revelation the group formed because Simon had promised him he’d “make it work” if he returned to X Factor. He entered the competition after his 2008 elimination.

“From what I’ve heard, that is part of the reason why One Direction was made,” Liam told Logan’s podcast. “He kind of started with my face and then worked around the rest. I’ve never told that story before.”

The 28-year-old proceeded to share more details, including his thoughts on Zayn Malik, an alleged backstage fight, and claiming the beginning of his solo career had been more successful than the rest of his bandmates. Liam also ended his controversial interview by talking about his ex-wife Cheryl, who he shares a child with.
