‘Phenomenal’. That was the word Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane used to describe teenager Miguel Gutierrez after the left-back made a barnstorming La Liga bow during Real Madrid’s 4-1 thumping of Granada back in May 2021.

But there was a caveat. Gutierrez’s first league start was an opportunity borne out of necessity, the youngster thrown in at the deep end with both Ferland Mendy and Marcelo unavailable.

“Miguel played because we didn’t have Ferland Mendy or Marcelo,” Zidane said. “I think he was phenomenal. I’m happy for him. He is a Real Madrid player.”

A Real Madrid player indeed. But not for much longer, perhaps.

As Martin Odegaard, Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz, Take Kubo, Borja Mayoral, Jorge de Frutos and Marcos Llorente found out, Los Blancos are not a club renowned for their patience. And, after the arrival of a proven, established world-class performer in David Alaba, Gutierrez followed up a breakthrough 2020/21 campaign with just three La Liga starts in 2021/22.

Does Miguel Gutierrez need to leave Real Madrid?

And therein lies the problem.

Gutierrez has clearly outgrown reserve-team football, but is obviously not viewed by Carlo Ancelotti as a player capable of challenging Mendy and Alaba for a starting spot at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And with Estadio Deportivo reporting that Real Madrid would consider selling Gutierrez for around £7 million – albeit presumably with a buy-back clause in his contract – one of Europe’s most exciting young left-backs may have to go the way of Hakimi and Odegaard if he wants to build on the potential he showed during the final few weeks of the Zidane era.

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds United were watching Gutierrez closely during the summer of 2021. Ditto West Ham United (Daily Star). 12 months on, both clubs remain in the market for a new left-back.

Leeds have lost the injury-prone Junior Firpo to yet another lay-off. Filip Kostic, meanwhile, must decide on whether to swap Champions League football for the Conference League.

Another West Ham target, David Raum, is on his way to RB Leipzig.

So Gutierrez, at £7 million, feels like an opportunity too good to miss. And while the academy graduate may be disappointed about the way his Real Madrid career appears to be ending, it’s worth remembering that things didn’t work out too badly for Hakimi, Odegaard or Llorente away from the Bernabau goldfish bowl.
