Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United transfer target, Douglas Luiz, to ‘stay’ at Aston Villa, as he told talkSPORT.

The 24-year-old has one-year left on his current deal and he was part of the club’s recent pre-season tour of Australia – the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle and AC Milan have shown interest in the player.

A number eight by trade, a technical player, who is aggressive without the ball, Luiz has played a more defensive role for Villa over the years, but he is better suited playing further forward and he hasn’t had that regular chance in the Midlands.

If he signs a new deal, then he will get that chance, with Steven Gerrard bringing in the more defensive-minded, Boubacar Kamara, to the club from Marseille.

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup, the jam-packed fixture list and five subs being introduced, Agbonlahor thinks Luiz should stay put.

“Keep this season, with the World Cup,” said Agbonlahor. “You are going to need a larger squad. Five subs as well. I think he will be a good squad player this season.”

WOULD LUIZ START FOR EITHER TOTTENHAM, NEWCASTLE OR AC MILAN?

If Luiz opts against signing a new deal, then Villa need to sell him this summer in order to generate cash from his sale – he joined in 2019 for £15 million from Manchester City.

With the rumoured clubs keen to sign Luiz, would he start for any of those sides ahead of the new Premier League season and Serie A season?

The Tottenham links need to be questioned because Luiz isn’t an Antonio Conte type of player, he prefers robust and hard-hitting players in midfield with a bit of presence, as he has with the likes of Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma.

At Newcastle, with Eddie Howe trying to transform the Magpies into a more possession-based team, he would suit their style and that type of transfer would work.

But, once again, why would he swap one team trying to get into Europe for another?

AC Milan won the Serie A title last season and Luiz would once again suit the Italian giants, and given that they are playing Champions League football, it’s understandable why he would leave Aston Villa for that.
