Manchester City will reportedly move to sign VfB Stuttgart defender Borna Sosa if they fail to land Marc Cucurella this summer, with the Bundesliga star also on Tottenham’s radar.
According to Bild journalist Christian Falk on Twitter, the 24-year-old Croatian international will be City’s insurance plan if they are unable to secure the Brighton & Hove Albion star’s signature, with Pep Guardiola eager to sign Cucurella following the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko.
TRUE If the deal with Marc Cucurella (24) won‘t work, @ManCity want to focus on Borna Sosa (24) @VfB @altobelli13— Christian Falk (@cfbayern) July 24, 2022
Previous reports have suggested that Stuttgart could sell Sosa this summer for as little as €25m (£20m) after the Bundesliga side just about escaped relegation, with the versatile left-back eager to move on to a bigger club after just about surviving in the German top-flight last season.
City aren’t alone in their interest for Sosa, though, with the aforementioned Tottenham also in the race to sign the defender, with Arsenal, FC Barcelona and Leeds United also reportedly in the race to sign the fullback, though these links were made before the start of the summer transfer window.
Indeed, whilst Cucurella remains City’s number one transfer target, recent reports suggest that Brighton will be standing firm this summer to keep the defender on the south coast, with the Seagulls slapping a £50m price tag on the 23-year-old left-back, a fee the Premier League champions are unwilling to match.
This is why Sosa could be a much more suitable option as a replacement for Zinchenko this summer, with Stuttgart willing to part with the defender for a much cheaper fee with the Croat also a player who could be more suited to City’s style of play given his incredible technical ability on the ball.

The new Premier League season will see City, for the first time in essentially two years, play with a natural centre-forward in Erling Haaland, and having a mean crosser from the fullback position could help the Norweigian superstar in his quest to break more goalscoring records in England, something that Sosa provides over Cucurella.
Indeed, whilst the Brighton star is a good crosser and passer of the ball given his Barcelona education, Sosa could be a lot more suited to what City need for the next few seasons with Haaland as their leading man, with the Bundesliga defender regarded as one of the division’s best crossers and a player who could get the best out of the 22-year-old in the years to come.
