Video shows Josh Hawley fleeing Capitol protesters

On Thursday (July 21), the House January 6 committee released security footage of Josh Hawley running for his own safety after protesters stormed into the US capitol.

Democratic congresswoman Elaine Luria played the video after showing a picture of Hawley raising his fist to protesters earlier in the morning outside of the building.

Ms Luria said: “Senator Josh Hawley also had to flee. Earlier that afternoon, before the joint session started, he walked across the east front of the Capitol.”

A number of social media users had a field day with the footage and were quick to share their reactions on Twitter.

More about the hearing

Elsewhere during the hearing, Luria showed Hawley’s fist picture and said: “We spoke with a Capitol police officer who was out there at the time. She told us that just Senator Hawley’s gesture riled up the crowd. And it bothered her greatly because he was doing it in a safe space, protected by the officers and the barriers.”

She continued: “Think about what we’ve seen. Undeniable violence at the Capitol. The vice president being evacuated to safety by the Secret Service. Senators running through the hallways of the Senate to get away from the mob.”

Speaking to HuffPost in March this year, Hawley denied that his fist gesture ‘encouraged rioters’.

He stated: “This was not me encouraging rioters … At the time that we were out there, folks were gathered peacefully to protest, and they have a right to do that. They do not have a right to assault cops.”
