British actor Joseph Quinn almost didn’t make it to his talk-show debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon – until he was recognised as his Stranger Things character.

Joseph Quinn has been the latest guest to attend and sit down on the famous couch with Jimmy Fallon. However, the 28-year-old actor almost didn’t make it on to the show after being held up by US immigration at the airport.

It comes as earlier this month, fans of the star rushed to defend him after allegedly being “yelled at” by staff for taking too long with fans at London’s Comic Con. The actor burst into tears the following day with a fan’s emotional speech. Comic-Con attendees claimed despite Joseph being hurried along, he made sure each fan at the meet & greet had a meaningful experience.

The Briton played the role of Eddie Munson in the fourth season of Stranger Things. Eddie is the leader of the Hellfire Club at Hawkins High, and plays electric guitar player in a band called Corroded Coffin. His character is also one of the friends – and a role model – of Dustin Henderson.

‘Leave Eddie alone’

On July 25, Joseph was invited to appear on his first-ever talk-show debut in the United States. What better way than it is with Jimmy Fallon, right? Well, Joseph Quinn almost didn’t make it past the US immigration desk – but Eddie won them over.

Explaining the strange situation, the actor said he had flown over from the United Kingdom, and landed yesterday. However, Joseph had a surprising encounter of immigration bringing him up to a desk with an officer to face a questionnaire. Funnily, he described it being “more of a dungeon”.

“I was waiting for about 20 minutes and then I was summoned to this desk where someone asked me, ‘what are you doing in the United States, Sir?‘,” Joseph recalled.

Naturally (and not lying, obviously), the 28-year-old actor responded: “I’m actually here to meet Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. And he didn’t believe me.“

Shortly after, another officer came into the room and realised who Joseph was. He jokingly told the officer, “leave Eddie alone”. The first officer watched in disbelief to learn it was “Eddie from Stranger Things” and let him through.

During his appearance on The Tonight Show, the actor spoke about his experience participating in the series, and a few other details. Jimmy Fallon has been praised by Stranger Things fans for bringing up several characters from the series into the show, including Joseph Quinn.

Struggling to get an American accent

To interpret certain characters, sometimes actors need to do more than just fake to be a character. In some cases, some have had to master accents. A notorious example would be Tom Holland for Spiderman or KJ Apa for Riverdale.

During an appearance at Ed Gamble and James Acaster’s podcast Off Menu, Joseph revealed he had been struggling to perfect his American accent and “felt like a sociopath”. With the help of his Stranger Things co-star Joe Keery who interprets Steve Harrington in the series, Joseph aced it.

He told Ed and James: “After a while, I was so far down the rabbit hole, at points I’d be like ‘Do I sound good? Do you like this? Do you like what I’m doing?”

Unsure about his performance and panicking over his accent, Keery came to the rescue promising that it was “gonna be fine”.

And so it did. Joseph aced his role as Eddie Munson.

Earlier this month, the British actor has been invited to attend a popular event, London’s Comic Con. However, Joseph didn’t have the best experience at the event and he ended up crying.

Joseph Quinn’s character as Eddie Munson has received a lot of attention, and with that comes a high demand for fans to see the actor IRL. Though his character’s journey ended before than the OG characters, he has become one of the most likable ones.

According to BuzzFeed News, the actor oversold his maximum capacity for his meet and greet by 400. On the day of the event, Joseph’s willingness of making the fan’s experience worth their money spent led him to being allegedly “yelled at” by a staff member.

Fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment at London’s Comic Con. However, they were praising the actor for being “genuine and friendly” via social media.

The following day, the British actor made another appearance at the event for a Q&A. A fan, whose name is Samantha, filmed their exchange of words on camera. She publicly apologised to the actor for “how he was treated” and thanked him “for sharing his time”.

After the crowd had applauded the actor, Joseph tried to hold back his tears at the emotional response. Samantha continued her speech by thanking the actor for the impact his character had made on the series. She also was grateful for the good experience took by meeting him personally the previous day.

Touched by her words, the actor burst into tears as the crowd applauded him for a second time.
