Sunderland host Coventry City on the opening day of the new Championship season after securing promotion, and only have two players left from the teams’ last meeting in 2020.

The Black Cats are returning to the second-tier after a four-year hiatus after Alex Neil led the Stadium of Light natives to glory at Wembley in May. His Sunderland side sealed a 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers, after ending the regular League One season in fifth-place.

Coventry climbed out of the third-tier back in the 2019/20 season, after finishing the term as champions. The Sky Blues have since sealed 16th and 12th-place Championship finishes, and will now meet Sunderland in a second-tier clash for the first time since February 2007.

Sunderland are without a win over Coventry in their last four meetings in all competitions, losing twice and drawing twice. The Sky Blues won the last encounter in March 2020 1-0 at St Andrew’s, with Matt Godden recording the only goal of the game in the second minute.

Just two of the men former Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson fielded in Birmingham remain at the Stadium of Light today. So, with that in mind, where are the last Sunderland XI to face Coventry now ahead of the Sky Blues’ trip to the North East to open the season on July 31?

Jon McLaughlin (GK): Starter of last Sunderland XI vs Coventry now at Rangers

Jon McLaughlin started in goal for Sunderland in their last XI to face Coventry but is now at Rangers. The goalkeeper left the Black Cats for the Gers at the end of the 2019/20 season, having turned down a new contract as the club did not double his pay, per Chronicle Live.

He spent two years with Sunderland after joining from Aberdeen in 2018, going on to play 90 times across all competitions and keep 27 clean sheets. Yet the transfer to Glasgow has mostly seen McLaughlin serve as the understudy with 30 appearances from a potential 94.

Luke O’Nien (RWB): Starter of last Sunderland XI vs Coventry still at club now

Luke O’Nien is one of the two players who started for Sunderland in their last meeting with Coventry still with the Black Cats now. The 27-year-old signed for the club from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018, and has gone on to make 174 appearances for 15 goals and 14 assists.

Tom Flanagan (CB): Starter of last Sunderland XI vs Coventry now at Shrewsbury

Tom Flanagan started Sunderland’s last encounter with Coventry in 2020, and remained at the Stadium of Light until this year. But the defender departed the North East in January to join Shrewsbury after four years in red-and-black, during the 30-year-old played 115 times.

Jordan Willis (CB): Starter of last Sunderland XI vs Coventry now a free agent

Jordan Willis joined Sunderland from Coventry in 2019, and would start in the last meeting between the clubs the following year. The centre-half had featured 208 times with the Sky Blues before making 60 outings with the Black Cats, who released him earlier this summer.

Sunderland chose to release Willis at the end of his contract in June, and he remains a free agent today. The 27-year-old had missed the entirety of last term after sustaining a patella tendon rupture in February 2021, and also later suffering a second rupture during surgery.

Alim Ozturk spent two years with Sunderland from 2018 to 2020 after joining the club from Boluspor. The 29-year-old would make 45 appearances before leaving for Umraniyespor, where he remained until this summer and signing for Turkish second-tier side Samsunspor.

Denver Hume (LWB): Sunderland product now at Portsmouth since January

Denver Hume honed his trade at the Academy of Light and broke through for his first-team Sunderland debut in 2018. The 23-year-old went on to gain a regular senior role from 2019 to 2020 as he recorded 84 outings, before joining Portsmouth this January for nine games.

George Dobson (CM): Charlton star started last Sunderland XI vs Coventry

Chris Maguire started Sunderland’s last meeting with Coventry before joining Lincoln City a year later. The Imps moved for the 33-year-old in 2021, following his three-year stay at the Stadium of Light, which featured 124 games for 28 goals and 26 assists in all competitions.

Lynden Gooch (LW): Starter of last Coventry encounter still at Sunderland now
