During his speech on Wednesday, July 20, about climate and clean energy, Joe Biden made a reference to having skin cancer in the present tense. Soon, confusion took over social media.

Biden, who grew up in Delaware, was describing the harmful effects of the emissions from oil refineries near his childhood home.

People then requested clarification from The White House as many assumed the President was currently suffering from cancer.

What did Joe Biden say?

Biden was talking about the struggles of growing up in Claymont, a city which was exposed to a lot of industrial waste.

He said people had to put on their windshield wipers to get rid of the oil deposit on the windows, before adding “That’s why I, and so damn many other people I grew up with, have cancer.”

The president’s usage of the present tense led to many assuming that he was suffering from cancer.

When PEOPLE contacted the White House for clarification, it was confirmed that Biden was referring to a medical condition he suffered from in the past.

How dumb is this tweet? Check out Biden’s medical report. Before he became president, he’d had non-melanoma skin cancers removed. Has no one at @RNCResearch ever had this common procedure? https://t.co/TS9VWtKcYC https://t.co/itklkVZIor— Glenn Kessler (@GlennKesslerWP) July 20, 2022

President is treated for skin cancer

Debunking the false assumptions that stemmed from the POTUS’ speech, Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post shared a link to the President’s medical records, which can be accessed on The White House’s official website.

Joe was treated for non-melanoma skin cancer before he became the President.

Point eight titled “Skin Cancer Surveillance, routine” states: “It is well-established that President Biden did spend a good deal of time in the sun in his youth.

“He has had several localized, non-melanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery before he started his presidency.”
