If it’s not tie-dye fleeces to obsess over, then it’s a fun new party game that fans are hooked on from Hulu and Disney Plus’ Only Murders in the Building.
Oliver’s Son of Sam game looks like a lot of fun indeed, but is it a real game? We reveal if the game already exists in the real world and discuss the origin of its name.
Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman for Hulu, Only Murders in the Building is a mystery-comedy starring Steve, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as residents in the titular building who share a passion for true crime.

Oliver’s Son of Sam game – Is it real?
During Only Murders in the Building Episode 5, titled The Tell, Oliver hosts a party game called Son of Sam, however, the game is not real and has been made up for the series.
The rules: Everyone is dealt a card and only one person receives the Son of Sam card. After the cards are dealt, the lights are switched off, encouraging the person dealt the Son of Sam card, or the murderer of the game, to pinch someone. After the lights are turned back on, the pinched victim pretends to die and the rest of the group has to figure out who the murderer is.
Simple in nature, the Son of Sam card game seems like it could exist in the real world, however, the name of the game is actually based on a real-life serial killer.
Only Murders In The Building — “The Tell” – Episode 205 — Mabel hosts a party for an eclectic art crowd which also serves a double purpose for smoking out a liar in the trio’s midst. Oliver relies on a party game and an era which he feels brings the best out in him to uncover the truth and any potential psycho killer. Oliver (Martin Short), shown. Who is the Son of Sam?
The summer of 1976 was a harrowing time for New Yorkers as reports of an unidentified man shooting and killing innocent civilians traveled fast.
Young women became targeted, most of them sitting in their parked cars, and the killing spree continued until the fall of 1977.
David Richard Berkowitz confessed to all eight murders after being arrested and was nicknamed the Son of Sam.
The killer was given the moniker because he claimed that his neighbor, Sam, had a demon dog that instructed him to perform the killings.
Netflix released an informative documentary on the serial killer, titled The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness, which is available to stream now.
