The film tells the story of an ex-CIA operative who is hunted across the globe by a former ally who is hellbent on taking him out.

Featuring several real-world elements, many will be left wondering if The Gray Man is based on a true story and what inspired Netflix’s most-expensive films.

Is The Gray Man based on a true story?

No, The Gray Man is not based on a true story.

Instead, the film takes inspiration from the novel of the same name by Mark Greaney.

Released in 2009, The Gray Man is the debut novel of the Tennessee-born author but is actually the second book he wrote.

The first, a story named Goon Squad, was rejected by publishers but agent Scott Miller urged Mark Greaney to continue writing and suggested using Court Gentry as the central character in his next work, which would go on to become The Gray Man.

After his early success, Mark Greaney was asked to become co-author to the legendary Tom Clancy and he helped co-write Clancy’s final three novels before the latter’s death and later continued the Jack Ryan franchise with the approval of Clancy’s family.

The Gray Man is not the first of Greaney’s books to be selected for a film adaptation as his 2021 audiobook Armored will be turned into a film by Sony Pictures and producer Michael Bay.

The Gray Man has sequel potential

Not only is The Gray Man based on a novel, but it’s also the first in a series of novels.

In total, The Gray Man novel series consists of a whopping 11 entries, with a 12th set to release in 2023.

The first book in the franchise exploded onto the scene in 2009 and has been followed by a new sequel almost every year, with the most recent entry, Sierra Six, arriving on bookstore shelves in February 2022.

If Netflix’s The Gray Man proves to be a success, there is a whole swathe of follow-up novels that could provide the inspiration for a sequel or two.

On top of The Gray Man, the other novels in the series are as follows:

The Gray Man (2009)On Target (2010)Ballistic (2011)Dead Eye (2013)Back Blast (2016)Gunmetal Gray (2017)Agent in Place (2018)Mission Critical (2019)One Minute Out (2020)Relentless (2021)Sierra Six (2022)Burner (2023)
