After Get Out and Us, horror fans were hailing Jordan Peele as the most promising filmmaker the genre has seen in many years.

His directorial feature debut in 2017 announced the arrival of a remarkable talent who was able to deliver socially conscious and thoughtful genre efforts while never compromising entertainment value.

Fortunately, Us proved that Get Out wasn’t a flash in the pan and it took little time at all for audiences to begin anticipating his third feature. Nope was eventually announced and the posters and teaser encouraged fans to ask an exciting question: has Jordan Peele stepped into sci-fi territory?

Later trailers confirmed that the project was something of an alien invasion movie. However, with Jordan, it’s never something straightforward. Never something you can nail down.

Now that it’s finally here, you may have another question. Is Nope based on a true story?

Is Nope based on a true story?

No, Nope is not strictly based on a true story. That being said, ABC News recently sat down with Jordan Peele and asked him about Nope referencing when the U.S. government declassified a video of Navy pilots encountering unexplained aircraft.

Opening up about how he reacted to this news, he explained:

“It made it very real, very much in the moment. It’s one of the reasons, I guess, I can proudly say this movie is based on a true story. But what was most nerve-wracking or scary to me about the whole thing is that you’d like to think that when actual video proof of UFOs comes out that something would change in our lifestyle, not it’s really business as usual.”

He added: “It just proves that there is a desensitization to spectacle. We’re addicted and we’re in over our heads with this addiction. We have proof of UFOs or UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena), but the interest with the major public goes so far. It’s very interesting.”

The New York Times reported in 2021 that the Department of Defense formally released a string of Navy videos that contained “unidentified aerial phenomena”, which explains why Jordan can say that Nope is somewhat based on a true story. Nevertheless, the movie is a work of fiction.

Movies that inspired Jordan Peele on Nope

Moving on from real-life events that helped give birth to Nope, it’s also worth highlighting the films that Jordan had in mind when sculpting his latest feature.

In the aforementioned ABC News interview, he cited Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and M Night Shyamalan’s Signs, which are overt influences.

“These are big-vision directors who have taken flying saucers and science fiction and have brought magic to the way they told those stories,” he explained. “I wanted to toss my hat in the ring to one of my favorite subgenres, in UFOs, and do it in a way only I can.”

On the other hand, he cited a number of westerns when speaking to Fox26 Houston, including The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Once Upon A Time in the West, and Unforgiven.

Going back to Spielberg, on the other hand, he said that it probably started with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, a particularly formative film for him.
