Tottenham Hotspur target Nicolo Zaniolo could become a ‘better’ centre-forward than Dusan Vlahovic, Serie A legend Zbigniew Boniek tells New Sound Radio after the Premier League giants submit a £25 million bid for the Roma ace.

Some claim.

Zaniolo scored just eight goals in 42 matches during 2021/22 after all. 21 fewer than Juventus’ new number seven.

But Boniek is part of a growing throng of observers suggesting that Zaniolo should be transformed from a dynamic attacking midfielder into more of a traditional number nine; A positional switch that would, in theory, make the most of the Italian’s fearsome physicality and stylish finishing.

“Zaniolo has incredible potential,” says Boniek, who won silverware at both Roma and Juventus in the 1980s.

“If you ask people what his position is, then everyone will give you a different response. In my view, he is a classic number nine. He can protect the ball, has physical strength, turns defenders well, is good in the air and can shoot.

“I always say when I see Vlahovic play that Zaniolo could do just as well. Perhaps even better, because he also has this strong physicality. He really is a great player.”

Zaniolo’s winning goal in the UEFA Conference League final victory over Feyenoord in May adds some meat to the bones of Boniek’s argument. A sublime dink over the advancing goalkeeper; The sort of dead-eyed finish Vlahovic, in particular, would be proud of.

It remains to be seen if that will be his final goal in Roma colours.

Zaniolo’s contract expires in 2024 and talks over an extension have reportedly broken down in rather acrimonious circumstances; A development that has not gone unnoticed over in England.

Fabio Paratici, Spurs’ director, spoke in glowing terms about the former Inter Milan youngster during his time in the Juventus boardroom. And, according to Calciomercato, Tottenham submitted an opening offer for Zaniolo last week.

The London giants were willing to pay £25 million, while including seldom-seen centre-back Joe Rodon as part of the deal. Rodon joined Spurs back in 2020, when Roma boss Jose Mourinho was still at the helm.
