Kalvin Phillips has opened up on Manchester United’s attempt to sign the England international whilst he was at Leeds United, with the midfielder revealing that he was always going to shoot the Red Devils down.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, the 26-year-old admitted that he was honoured to receive interest from United during the summer, however, Phillips noted that his loyalties to Leeds meant that a move to United was never going to happen despite the opportunity.

Instead, Phillips signed for United’s cross-city rivals Manchester City, with the midfielder leaving in a reported £45m deal after asserting himself as one of the Premier League’s best players in the past two seasons with Leeds and leaving his boyhood club for a side that would not cause riots amongst supporters.

Indeed, Phillps’ departure will leave a big void in the Leeds squad, with the midfielder still reportedly in the club WhatsApp group chat as the England international spends his first pre-season not as a member of the Yorkshire side, with City currently out on the United States.

Leaving Elland Road was always going to happen eventually for Phillips, but according to the player himself, a move to United was never on the cards, even though the Red Devils did make an approach to sign the dynamic midfielder this summer.

Phillips said: “Going to United? here was never any chance of me going there. You know my loyalty to Leeds. My family are all Leeds fans. I was honoured by United wanting me, one of the biggest teams in the world but, no, I had to stay loyal to Leeds and go to the other side of Manchester. It’s just the way I am. I want to be loyal to the people who have given me the biggest opportunity in the world.”

Very few players have crossed the Leeds – United divide via Elland Road, yet thankfully for supporters, Phillips didn’t join that very small list this summer with the midfielder instead signing for City, a decision that will benefit both the player and the Whites in the long-term.

After all, Leeds got a huge transfer fee for an academy player whilst Phillips now gets to play for a club where silverware is almost guaranteed every season, and the midfielder could go on to become a superstar for Pep Guardiola’s side after rejecting a move to United.
