Gilberto Silva has made it clear that he wants ‘Arsenal to be champions’ ahead of the new Premier League season, with Manchester City and Liverpool the favourites for the main crown.

Many will expect Pep Guardiola’s side to win the whole thing again, whilst Liverpool are always close behind, but Silva made it clear that, for Arsenal as a club, they ‘always have to look for first place’, as he told Sky Sports.

The long-term plan of this Mikel Arteta project would be to become Premier League champions again, but in reality, they are far, far away from the likes of Liverpool and Man City.

Trying to compete with the elite teams is the short-term aim, and in truth, they should have reached that target last season, only to capitulate from a mental standpoint and hand Tottenham fourth spot.

But ahead of the new Premier League season, Silva is thinking of winning the Premier League title and nothing else.

“I want them to be champions,” said Silva. “This is what I want from Arsenal. When you look at a club like Arsenal, you can’t expect something less than that.

“Okay, to be in the top four, it’s not bad, but it’s not enough for a club like this. When you are at Arsenal, I can’t stand that.

“You have to always look for the first place. Look for the titles. And I think that has to be the main point.”

RELIVING THE GLORY DAYS

During Silva’s day, even finishing second would have been deemed a failure by the club, but those days are now long gone.

It has remarkably been nearly two decades since the Gunners were last champions of England, when Silva was playing and when they went the entire season unbeaten.

If Arteta can help secure fourth next term, then it will be seen as a bit of a success and progression, but not enough.

Arteta still has his doubters and he can answer a fair few critics if he guides the club back to the Champions League.

If he doesn’t, then the pressure on his shoulders will increase big time, especially given that they have been the biggest spenders of the last two summer windows.
