West Ham United are reportedly closing in on Filip Kostic but Eintracht Frankfurt team-mate Sebastian Rode believes the winger will choose the Champions League over the Premier League, speaking to Kicker.

Is there a more underrated footballer in Europe than Filip Kostic?

The Serbia international might have announced himself to a wider audience last season – named the Europa League’s Player of the Tournament while ripping Barcelona to shreds en route to Seville – but avid Bundesliga watchers will tell you that Kostic has been performing at a consistently high level for the best part of half a decade.

In 169 games, the former Hamburg and Stuttgart flyer has either scored or set up 96 goals in the colours of Eintracht Frankfurt. Numbers that rival anyone on the continent.

And, at the age of 29, it’s high-time his electrifying performances on the left-hand side are getting the attention they deserve.

West Ham want Filip Kostic from Eintracht Frankfurt

According to The Guardian, backed up by Fabrizio Romano, West Ham submitted a bid for Kostic on Friday. But, despite entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Commerzbank Arena, Frankfurt team-mate Rode is hopeful that the lure of Champions League football will convince Kostic to stick around.

“It’s part of the business,” says Rode, not remotely surprised to see Kostic back in the gossip columns.

“With Filip, it’s a never-ending story. (Kostic, Daichi Kamada and Evan Ndicka) are absolute pillars of our team.

“Sure, they only have one year left on their contract. But I have the feeling that they actually want to stay here with us and experience the Champions League.”

Frankfurt reportedly value Kostic – who’s direct style and lethal left boot are somewhat reminiscent of a young Gareth Bale during his Tottenham Hotspur heyday – in the region of £17 million. Should he sign on the dotted line, he is likely to slot into the left wing-back role at West Ham.

The Hammers were also keen on fellow Bundesliga leftie, Hoffenheim’s David Raum. But the German international is set to join RB Leipzig instead.

Interestingly, Kostic shares an agent with another West Ham target – Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca.
