Club Brugge team-mate Hans Vanaken believes Charles de Ketelaere is ready for the next step as AC Milan battle Premier League outfit Leeds United for the Belgium international, speaking to Het Laaste Nieuws.

Well, as fights go, it seems a little one-sided.

And while AC Milan are yet to deliver the knockout blow, Leeds have been left feeling a little bruised by De Ketelaere’s apparent reluctance to become the latest in a series of intriguing summer signings at Elland Road.

Whites boss Jesse Marsch insists that Leeds have not hit the canvas just yet. Or thrown in the towel, to continue this rather tortured metaphor.

But, after submitting a £30 million bid for the so-called ‘next Kevin de Bruyne’, the former RB Leipzig boss adds that Leeds have ‘moved on to some other targets’ as De Ketelaere holds out for the Serie A champions instead.

“Against Milan in the Champions League could be a nice reunion!,” Vanaken laughs when quizzed about De Ketelaere’s seemingly impending exit.

“I haven’t seen (Milan director) Paolo Maldini here this week! But we all read (the speculation).

“There are no secrets. We all know that Milan will go to any lengths to get Charles. We’re not swinging all those La Gazzetta dello Sport covers here, but we do talk some Italian to him sometimes.

“Charles is a super talent who has grown enormously here in three years. He has shown that he is ready to take the step.”

Club Brugge are not going to stand in De Ketelaere’s way. The fact they accepted Leeds’ club-record £30 million is proof of that, with the deal stalling on the player’s side.

But neither are they going to rush De Ketelaere into a decision, as AC Milan continue to negotiate a deal for one of the most exciting young forwards in the game.

“How did it go? Good,” Maldini tells TMW after holding talks with De Ketelaere’s camp this week. “There is confidence. Are we going to close (the transfer)? Let’s try.”
