Steven Gerrard has dropped a big hint about Cameron Archer’s future at Aston Villa by sharing that the Rangers target is ‘staying’ if he had to make the call right now.
The 20-year-old was at it again on Wednesday when he scored Villa’s winner, from the bench, during another pre-season friendly win, this time against Brisbane Roar in Australia.
The last 12 months have been game-changing for Archer from playing at non-league side Solihull Moors to scoring a hat-trick on his senior Villa debut.

Everything he seems to be touching are turning into goals, hence why several Championship teams and Glasgow giants, Rangers, are keen to bring him on board this summer.
Gerrard was full of praise for Villa’s youngsters following their latest pre-season win, as he bigged up Archer’s movement and quality in the final third, as quoted by the Express and Star.
“They really stepped forward,” said Gerrard. “What they’re doing is they’re sending messages to more experienced people that there’s a fight on from now until the game against Bournemouth and beyond because the window is still open.
“They’ve given me serious things to think about and that’s the reason why I’m here.
“Cam showed everything that Cam’s about, movement, quality, could have a hat-trick but for a few good blocks but, again with Cam, if you don’t let me leave the room and I’d have to make a decision now, he’d be staying in the door.”

WHAT NEXT FOR ARCHER?
Villa’s thriving youngster is at a critical stage of his development, where the door is open for him to star regular games in Claret & Blue colours, or earn regular game time elsewhere.
He proved in Preston colours just what he can do during a short period of time, scoring six goals for the club, including an outstanding winner against bitter rivals Blackpool.
Those big moments are what he can experience on a regular basis if he secures a loan elsewhere, but he risks warming the bench and missing out on that if he stays at Villa.
However, on the same note, Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings didn’t exactly set the world alight last season, a door is open to push ahead of them, especially given that Archer has looked better than Watkins in pre-season.
Staying put at Villa is perhaps the best option because Gerrard also likes to play two up top and there’s no point in sending Archer out when he is riding such a wave.
