Arsenal technical director Edu Gaspar has revealed that talks were held with Raphinha before the Brazilian international signed for FC Barcelona.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Gunners official lifted the lid on Arsenal’s chase for the former Leeds United superstar, with Edu saying that he held talks with Raphinha’s agent, Deco, though it was clear from the start that the 25-year-old had his heart set on signing for Barcelona.

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Raphinha for the majority of the month, with some reports suggesting that the Gunners were internally confident in signing the-then Leeds superstar, however, Barcelona swooped in and secured the Brazilian’s signature in a reported £55m deal.

Indeed, Arsenal supporters on social media were fuming that a deal collapsed, but to Edu, it made sense why a transfer never happened. The technical director said: “People think we went in too deep about Raphinha, because Raphinha was everywhere. It’s fair we did have some conversations with Deco because Deco is his agent and I have a good relationship [with him], we are friends.

“I just said to Deco, ‘Can you explain to me the situation with Raphinha?’ and he was clear, ‘Edu, we have a good relationship but I’m not going to lie to you, his idea is to go to Barcelona because he’s dreaming to go to Barcelona, and we’ve been talking to Barcelona since a long time ago’.”

Arsenal’s pursuit for Raphinha was always an ambitious one, yet the second Barcelona entered the race for the Brazilian attacker, it was essentially game over for the Gunners, with the La Liga giants the club the 25-year-old has always dreamed of playing for.

Whilst the move could be viewed as a blow, it’s easy to forget that Arsenal have still had an impressive window, with Gabriel Jesus stealing the show in pre-season and Oleksandr Zinchenko already looking to be one of the smartest signings of the summer so far.
