Kenny Dalglish has expressed his delight at Aston Villa naming John McGinn as their new captain by adding that he is a player who ‘cares about the club’, as he wrote in his SP column.

The Scotland and Liverpool legend added that McGinn is a ‘popular figure’ with the Villa fans because of the ‘commitment, desire and energy’ he showcases on a weekly basis.

That’s probably a big reason why Steven Gerrard handed such a significant role to the 27-year-old, who signed for Villa in 2018 when they were in the Championship.

Brought in as an unknown figure from Scottish Premiership side, Hibernian, McGinn took to life in England like a duck to water, helped Villa earn promotion to the Premier League and won the Supporters Player of the Year.

Fast forward to the present and he has now replaced Tyrone Mings as skipper, which is a popular choice and a call that Dalglish has backed following Gerrard’s ruthless move.

“Steven Gerrard has appointed John McGinn as his captain at Aston Villa, and it’s great to see him take the armband,” said Dalglish.

“John is a popular figure with the Villa fans, and they have taken him to their hearts because of his quality, commitment, desire and energy. He cares about the club, and the fans relate to that.

“John has been a consistent performer for four years at Villa Park, and he will keep that going, I’m sure.

“That’s also good news for Scotland manager, Steve Clarke, and he will hope to see John, Andy Robertson, Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour, Che Adams and the rest all do well.”

MCGINN REPLACES MINGS

This decision from Gerrard was coming and one the Villa fans were expecting because the legendary midfielder had been hinting at it from the back end of last season.

From Gerrard’s point of view, this isn’t a dig at Mings’ leadership skills because he is probably still the best individual for that role at the club.

It’s a case of the Villa boss being unsure of the England international’s performances, and when you have that doubt, then you can’t be seen dropping your captain to the bench.

Therefore, with that pressure now taken off Mings, he can now prove to Gerrard that he was wrong in his call, which just bodes well for Villa.

At the end of the day, competition is needed and this kind of stuff might just spice things up, as the Midlands outfit push for Europe this season.
