Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Tottenham’s signing of Destiny Udogie, and he’s shared an interesting detail from behind the scenes.

Indeed, Romano says that Spurs genuinely had the chance to sign Pervis Estupinan from Villarreal before moving for Udogie, but they moved for the Udinese man due to the fact Antonio Conte is a massive fan of the youngster.

Spurs had to act quickly with Udogie as Fabio Paratici had caught wind of the fact that both Inter and Juventus were keen on the youngster, therefore, they got the deal done as soon as possible.

What’s been said?

Romano shared what he knows about Udogie and Estupinan.

“Udogie is a signing for the future, he’s signed the contract and will join next summer, he’s going back on loan to Udinese now. Let me say that behind the scenes why Tottenham decided to sign Udogie now. They had the possibility to sign Estupinan from Villarreal who is joining Brighton, but they went for Udogie because Antonio Conte is a big fan of this guy. Paratici has been following him since he was at Verona, before Udinese, and he knows that many important clubs in Italy, Juventus and Inter, were following Udogie, so he wanted to sign Udogie immediately,” Romano said.

Rolled the dice

Pervis Estupinan is probably the safer bet between these two players at the moment. After all, he has played Champions League football and La Liga is a stronger league than Serie A these days, but with Udogie being considerably younger than the Ecuadorian, this may be a gamble worth taking.

Make no mistake about it, Udogie is a real star in the making. The youngster had a tremendous end to last season, grabbing five goals and four assists last term, and if he continues on an upwards trajectory, he will be one of the very best players in the Premier League once he hits his peak.

Tottenham may have gotten better results out of Estupinan this season, and we’re going to now see what he’s capable of at Brighton, but they’re building for the future with Udogie.
