‘Good option’: Conte says £23m Tottenham player could have a different role next season

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte has told Football.London that Lucas Moura could be used as a wing-back next season.

Conte has said that although Lucas is a winger by trade, he could use the £23 million Tottenham star (BBC Sport) as a wing-back.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss has pointed out how he converted Ivan Perisic and Victor Moses from wingers into wing-backs.

Tottenham head coach Conte has also praised Brazil international Lucas for his versatality.

Antonio Conte on Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Moura

Conte told Football.London about Lucas Moura: “I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me and in the past I converted Perisic in that position.

“[Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option.

“The most important thing is that the player has to be 100 per cent sure to do it, but he is available and Lucas Moura for us is a great resource because he can play in many roles. He can play behind the striker, on the right, on the left, as a wing back.”

Important player

In our view, Lucas Moura will be an important player for Tottenham Hotspur under head coach Antonio Conte next season.

Conte clearly values the 29-year-old and what he brings to his Tottenham team.

The Tottenham head coach watches Lucas on a regular basis, and he must have seen something that made him realise that the Brazilian can play as a wing-back and actually succeed in that role.

In pre-season, Conte will get the chance to work with Lucas in that role and help him understand what he wants from the Brazilian as a wing-back.

Lucas has scored 19 goals and created 21 big chances in 137 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.
