Manchester City are reportedly close to signing Scottish youngster Emilio Lawrence from Premier League rivals Everton, with the teenager set to join the club’s U-23s.

According to Fabrizio Romano, City have wrapped up the signing of Lawrence with the 16-year-old talent set to sign a long-term contract with the Premier League giants in the coming days, with a medical already being completed for Lawrence’s move to Manchester.

The attacking midfielder was a regular for Everton’s U-18s last season as Lawrence bagged an impressive seven goals and three assists in 21 appearances, with the Scotland and England youth international also featuring for the U-23s in Premier League 2 towards the end of the campaign.

City have seen plenty of activity in their development squads this summer with their U-23s, in particular, seeing huge departures and a lot of revenues generated from the sale of some top youth talents, with Gavin Bazunu and Romeo Lavia both signing for Southampton whilst Samuel Edozie is reportedly set to sign for Bayer Leverkusen.

With City losing so many top talents, it makes sense why the club have moved to sign Lawrence, who is regarded, as per the Scottish Sun, as one of Everton’s most exciting prospects, with the 16-year-old versatile enough to play in both the attacking midfield role and in the frontline.

Indeed, whilst it will be some time before we see Lawrence turn out for Pep Guardiola’s side, signing the Everton starlet is an encouraging sign from City, who are adding quality homegrown players from across the country to replace those who have been sold for huge fees in the youth squads.

Lawrence has clearly caught talent spotters at some of England’s biggest clubs, and City moving fast to sign the youngster is a good sign of intent from the Premier League champions, who could do with fleshing out their U-23 side after the sales that have occurred this summer.

Whilst the Everton youngster is still years away from the first team, the early signs are so far promising enough to suggest that Lawrence could one day develop into a top player for City, especially if he is to follow the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer into the senior squad in the future.
