Thomas Tuchel thinks Mikel Arteta ‘will try to start’, the XI that began Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea on Sunday, in the Premier League, as he told Football London.

The Chelsea boss added that Arsenal played with their ‘strongest’ XI during their pre-season game and they have ‘strengthened’ it this summer, as well as this current team being together for ‘more than one year’ now.

Aaron Ramsdale started in between the sticks for the Gunners, as he did for most of last season, with Ben White playing at right-back, rather than his usual centre-back role.

That’s because Arteta paired the returning William Saliba with Gabriel, whilst recent signing Oleksandr Zinchenko started at left-back, with the usual middle three of Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Martin Odegaard.

Compared to last season, it’s a new-look front three for the Champions League-chasing side, with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli providing the goal threat.

Despite there being a fair few changes from last season by Arsenal, Tuchel had this to say about their 4-0 loss and how their London rivals were too strong for them.

“I think we deserved to lose,” said Tuchel. “We can argue they played with I think their strongest line-up; they’ve had now together several weeks and for more than one year. They’ve strengthened their line-up, played the same structure, and this is the line-up they’ll try to start Premier League games.

“I saw today a team in Arsenal who are mentally committed to an idea of playing, a level of exhaustion, a level of physical commitment that we could not match.

“Also, a level of mental commitment that we lacked because we have a lot of players who are thinking about leaving and looking at their options. We have players that have left and I think at the moment that’s obvious.

“My personal feeling, I don’t know if I ever lost a match in pre-season 4-0. I can’t remember not winning two matches in a row in pre-season. I’m a huge fan of a strong pre-season in everything: atmosphere, feeling, performance, belief.”

CAN ARSENAL REPLACE CHELSEA IN THE TOP FOUR?

Even if Manchester City or Liverpool drop a level, they would still secure Champions League football, so that leaves two spots open heading into the new season.

Tottenham have spent and backed Antonio Conte heading into the new season and they will do everything in their power to keep hold of that Champions League key.

But, if Arsenal are to secure a top-four finish, who can they push ahead of?

Are Chelsea vulnerable heading into the new season? Their defence still needs more depth and quality, whilst that out-and-out striker or more firepower is also needed.

Either way, it’s going to be interesting to see how Tuchel reacts to this defeat, in regards to letting players go this summer, because Chelsea might just be one of the busiest teams during the latter stages of the summer transfer window.
