According to Fabrizio Romano, Southampton have submitted a £16m bid to sign Burnley target Liam Delap from Manchester City.

What’s the story?

Well, this is quite a sizeable offer from the Saints, seeing as the 19-year-old has only made six first-team appearances in his career so far.

Romano believes Southampton have offered £16m for Delap, who is said to be Ralph Hasenhuttl’s No.1 target, although Manchester City have rejected the bid.

In our view, £16m for a player with such little first-team experience is a very fair offer, so Southampton will surely be disappointed to see it turned down.

It comes after Burnley also expressed an interest in signing the teenager – Vincent Kompany has already returned to the Etihad Stadium to pinch CJ Egan-Riley and Taylor Harwood-Bellis from the Citizens.

However, the Clarets have only enquired about a loan deal, rather than a permanent move.

Interest in Delap comes after he scored eight goals in just ten Premier League 2 appearances last season, while also providing two assists.

Southampton could beat Burnley to a special signing

In our view, Southampton are being very smart with their approach to business this summer.

As we’ve seen in the likes of Marc Guéhi, Tino Livramento, Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher, there are some phenomenal talents in the academies of top six sides.

Rather than wait for them to become unattainable £30m assets like Broja now is – thanks to Southampton developing him – Hasenhuttl is attempting to jump the gun and sign them permanently before their value surges.

That has been evident through the £14m signing of Romeo Lavia and the £12m capture of Gavin Bazunu, with both prospects coming from Manchester City.

Now, if Southampton can also sign Delap, who astonishingly boasts 35 goals in 36 appearances for the Manchester City Under-23 side, the 2022/23 campaign could be a very exciting one for the Saints.
