Speaking on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily Podcast, Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has been discussing James Maddison’s future amid growing interest from Newcastle United.

The Magpies have now bid twice for Maddison, and while neither of those bids have been accepted, the Tyneside club haven’t been deterred in their pursuit.

Indeed, according to Edwards, Newcastle genuinely believe that Maddison wants to come to St James’ Park, and while they’ve not met his asking price yet, they’re led to believe he wants to join.

What’s been said?

Edwards spoke about Maddison’s situation.

“I do have a suspicion that Maddison might be after a new contract from Leicester and the best way to get a new contract is to have interest from another club but Newcastle genuinely believe that the player wants to join them, that’s why the second bid has gone in. I think Leicester are entitled to ask for £60m, but we’re entering the final month of the window which is why it is so exciting. This story will evolve over the next 24 to 48 hours,” Edwards said.

Conflicting

Edwards is well-connected within Newcastle, so we’re sure he’s right in what he’s saying, but there have been some conflicting reports on this front.

Indeed, while Newcastle believe that Maddison wants to join, Dean Jones has reported the exact opposite.

Jones states that Maddison has no interest in Newcastle, claiming that he’d rather join Arsenal or Tottenham, and, to be honest, that makes more sense.

Spurs have been credited with an interest, so perhaps that move is more likely.

As with any player, the pull of playing European football is incredibly alluring, and unfortunately, Newcastle can’t offer that right now.

What Newcastle can offer though is plenty of money and an exciting project, so perhaps that could sway the midfielder’s decision.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
